I am U Thu Htet Aung. I am a Red Cross volunteer at the Myanmar Red Cross Society Sinphyugyun town Red Cross sub branch. I joined Red Cross in 1994. I learnt to value people’s lives more after becoming a Red Cross volunteer. I have committed myself to social and humanitarian works because I have empathy and understanding of people.
In 2020, after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, our town’s Red Cross branch was reorganized with a new generation of volunteers. Currently, as our usual work, we are carrying out COVID-19 prevention activities and blood donation activities, providing first aid treatment for victims of various accidents and sending accident victims and patients to the hospital in Red Cross ambulances.
One memory that I helped someone
A few years ago, we sent a patient who got a neck injury from a fight to Sinphyugyun hospital with our Red Cross ambulance, and later to Magway public hospital. I encouraged him to remain conscious on the way although I was not very positive about his prospects. Three months later, I came across that man yelling out and selling things in the market. I couldn’t help it, but my eyes were filled with tears of joy when I saw him again. He may not remember me and that I helped him that night.
” I tell myself that we, Red Cross volunteers, are helping people not for the popularity or name and not to achieve position.”
